Everything was great, thanks again for your help with this especially at such short notice. The interpreter was brilliant across all 3 events and guests benefitted greatly with having her around.

Britain is on the verge of a phenomenal growth in Chinese tourism and business investment, and we want to help UK companies of all sizes, across all industries, prepare for this wave of opportunity. To attract the Chinese and cater for their specific demands, organisations, businesses and service providers need to offer a Chinese-friendly service. This is where we can help.

Our professional translators and interpreters are all native Chinese with masters degrees in conference interpreting and translation, as well as having experience translating and interpreting for a range of business sectors. They can assist companies with:

  • Interpreting services at corporate meetings, events or exhibitions
  • Provision of audio guides in Mandarin Chinese

We are already working with a number of UK-based companies, including multinational pharmaceuticals, football clubs, accommodation providers and museums, to help them improve their Chinese offering. In addition, we are always looking to collaborate with more tourist attractions, accommodation and activity providers in our endeavour to showcase more of Britain to the Chinese market.

Do the Chinese Know You Exist?

The Chinese were the top international tourism spenders in 2015, spending $129 billion globally. Importantly, they are aware of this statistic and know the value they bring to local businesses when abroad. As a result, Chinese visitors to the UK want two opposing things – to be treated as ‘global visitors’ (not ignorant travellers from the countryside who are scared of the number 4!), and at the same time, to be treated as superior and with more respect than others. Below are 5 simple steps your business could take to attract more Chinese:
  • 1) Start with what you have

Instead of starting by second-guessing what the Chinese want (they’re a hugely diverse community and their demands vary enormously), start with what your business has to offer the Chinese and then figure out which of them will be interested. Students studying in the UK? First-time visitors? Businessmen?
  • 2) Convey your message in Chinese

Out of a population of 1.3 billion, China has only 10 million people capable of using English for meaningful communication. A Chinese language version of your website or even just one page in Chinese can help put your business on the map and will also convey a warm, welcoming message to your potential Chinese customers.
  • 3) Provide a warm welcome

For accommodation providers this might be in the form of translated hotel information packages or staff armed with a few key Chinese phrases, whilst tourist destinations and attractions can easily provide printed information or directions in Chinese.
  • 4) Look after the details

As the Chinese realise their weight and importance in the travel market, they are demanding more. Making small changes or additions to your service will ensure your Chinese visitors have an easy and enjoyable visit. This might include: providing slippers in hotels, hot water machines/kettles in your facilities, offering some Chinese food on your menus or accepting major Chinese credit cards and payment methods such as Union Pay and Alipay.
  • 5) If at first you don't succeed...

Try different ways. Flexibility and resilience are key. Sometimes the answer may be closer to home. For example, 26% of international students in the UK are Chinese, and they can be reached via means with which we are already familiar. Mutual help and trust are also key, but these cannot be purchased, so be sure to nurture relationships of trust with your first few Chinese customers and you may just reap the rewards in the long run.
