Two of the most scenic and atmospheric castles in Britain await you on this tour. On Day 1 you’ll explore Bamburgh Castle, perched 150 feet high upon the rugged Northumberland Coast, with incredible views of the North Sea and the Farne Islands. In good weather, you can take a short walk alongside the castle through a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our second castle on the itinerary is further down the coast at Alnwick, one of the most picturesque towns in the region. We’ll stop here for lunch before taking you inside Alnwick Castle itself, the filming location of Hogwarts School in Harry Potter and the 2014 Downton Abbey Christmas Special.
On Day 2 we will take a trip to Beamish Museum, a one-of-a-kind living museum and reconstructed town showing life in Britain from the 18th to 20th century. Here, you can step back in time and explore a typical English market town in the years leading up to the First World War, descend a coal mine and get an idea of what it was like to work down there, or ride aboard an old-fashioned steam train to an 1820’s country house. The best thing about Beamish? You won’t find any objects displayed in glass cases like at most museums, everything is in its original context and you can even try out some of the items yourself. There are actors dressed in period clothing with demonstrations going on around every corner, and with your native British Mandarin-speaking guides by your side you’ll understand everything that’s going on and really feel like you’ve travelled back in time!
Alternatively, you can spend the morning visiting one of the most spectacular sections of Hadrian’s Wall, the (smaller) British equivalent of the Great Wall, built by Roman emperor Hadrian to protect his empire from the Scots north of the border. Here you can walk around the remains of one of the main fortresses built on the wall, see a 2000 year old toilet (still intact!), and even take a short walk along the wall to enjoy more of the spectacular scenery in the Northumbria national park.
On Day 3 we’ll show you around Durham, a World Heritage Site with one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Britain. It is here that many scenes from Harry Potter were filmed, and you could even be dining in a private room used as Professor McGonagall’s classroom in the movie! In the afternoon you can visit one of the most spectacular art museums in the North of England, housed within a stunning French chateau and containing outstanding collections of European fine and decorative art, with the option of taking afternoon tea in your own private room. Alternatively, if you’re after a truly unique experience, you might opt to go on a shooting or fishing expedition. If you’d like to extend your trip to a 4-day tour, we can arrange a fourth night in your own private country house, as featured on national TV, with private dining included. Or why not spend a night at Greta Bridge, where Charles Dickens set one of his most famous novels, Nicholas Nickleby, and is said to have stayed himself when writing the novel. This is an action-packed tour with plenty of customisable elements to suit all tastes!
* Please note: the itinerary for this tour is subject to change, based on accommodation availability, your train times and tour start/end points. All transfers are by car unless otherwise stated.

These activities are fixed and form the foundation of your tour itinerary. We believe they are the best bits of each tour that nobody should miss out on!
Bamburgh Castle
(approx. 1.5 hours)
Bamburgh Castle is over a thousand years old and the former home of the kings of Northumbria. It’s a spectacular site, perched 150 feet high above the rugged Northumberland Coast with incredible views of the North Sea and the Farne Islands.
Alnwick and Alnwick Castle
(approx. 2 hours)
A short way down the Northumberland Coast from Bamburgh is Alnwick, one of the most picturesque towns in the region and home to Alnwick Castle. The castle starred as a brand new location in the Downton Abbey 2014 Christmas special and it was also used as the location of Hogwarts School in Harry Potter. This is an absolute must for any visitor to the North East!
Beamish Museum
(Half or full day excursion)
Beamish Museum is not your average museum. It is an award-winning, life-size reconstruction of a British town from the past. There is plenty to see, including a country house, a coal mine, a steam train, numerous shops and old-fashioned streets. What makes this a truly unique attraction however are the actors, dressed in period clothing, who interact with you as you explore the town.
Durham City and Cathedral Tour
(approx. 2 hours)
Durham is a city in the North East of England and is well known for its world-famous Norman cathedral and 11th-century castle. It also has a nationally acclaimed university, Durham University, which has a similar college system to Oxford and Cambridge. But it is the cathedral that truly defines the city, in fact, you may recognise it from the Harry Potter films, as it is here that you will find the location of Professor McGonagall’s classroom!

This is where you can get creative! Pick the activities that suit you and your group best. Please note, all group members must participate in the same activities and not all combinations are possible.
Hadrian’s Wall and Housesteads Roman Fort
(approx. 1 hour)
Hadrian’s Wall marks the border of the Roman Empire at its greatest size, and was used as a defensive line for England against the Scottish tribes to the north. Like the Great Wall of China, it is a spectacular site and an impressive feat of engineering. Although it cannot match up to the Great Wall in size and scale, it served a very similar purpose – both were built to keep the barbarians out and, over time, both failed to do so!
Visit to the Bowes Museum
(approx. 1.5 hours)
The Bowes Museum is one of the most spectacular art museums in the North of England, holding nationally and internationally important collections of paintings, sculptures and ceramics. This activity is perfect for anyone with a particular interest in art, or architecture for that matter, as the museum building itself is designed in the manner of a French chateau and surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens.
Fishing Excursion
(Half day excursion)
For those with a passion for fishing, we can arrange a private fishing trip with your own personal teacher to teach you how to fly fish.
Clay Pigeon Shooting
(half day excursion)
If you’re after a truly unique experience, we can take you clay pigeon shooting in the countryside with your own professional instructor.
Extra Night at a Country House
If you’d like to make your trip into a 4-day tour, we can arrange an extra night for you in your very own British country house. Nestled in a tranquil part of the North East, this Georgian country home has featured on national TV, and is the perfect setting for a one-of-a-kind British experience.
Extra Night at a 4* hotel and the location of one of Charles Dickens’ novels
For literature lovers, you might prefer to spend an extra night in the 4-star Morritt Arms Hotel at Greta Bridge. It is here where Charles Dickens set one of his most famous novels, Nicholas Nickleby, and he is said to have stayed a night in the village himself!
