On Day 1 of this tour, we’ll take you around Fountains Abbey, one of the most spectacular and best-preserved abbeys in Britain, dating back to 1132. Afterwards, a spectacular drive through the Yorkshire Dales National Park will take us to Reeth, where you can soak up the atmosphere of a typical Yorkshire village and join us on a scenic walk into the countryside, or to the market town of Hawes. Here you can visit one of Britain’s most famous cheese making factories, or a waterfall and a pub once visited by William Wordsworth and Britain’s most famous painter, J. M. W Turner. Much of this route follows the same route as the Tour de France, along winding country roads and through some sublime rural scenery.
Day 2 will start with another gorgeous drive through the Dales, with high, breathtaking views, swooping twists, hills and bends. If you wish to, we will stop for lunch at a grade 1 listed medieval restaurant in the shadow of a 600-year old tower – a fantastic dining experience you won’t forget. Once we reach the southern tip of the Dales, you’ll board a traditional British steam train to the village of Haworth, where we will visit the former home of the Brontë family and walk in the footsteps of the famous Brontë sisters, seeing where they lived, studied and wrote their most famous pieces of literature. Dinner can be taken in the town or en route to York, in Harrogate, where you’ll find an abundance of restaurants and brasseries including the original branch of the famous ‘Betty’s’ tearoom.
If you choose our 4-day tour, Day 3 will be spent in York – a medieval city known for its world-class cathedral and historic buildings. We will take you on a full walking tour of the city, visiting the street so atmospheric it was used in the Harry Potter films, and York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. After lunch we’ll show you around York Castle Museum where you’ll discover first-hand what York was like in Victorian times, and what it was like to be locked up in an 18th century prison. There will also be plenty of time for shopping or relaxing in one of York’s many coffee shops and your guides will be happy to point you in the direction of the best stores or more attractions.
On the final day of this tour, there is a range of activities for you to choose from. If you’re interested in heritage and country house living, you may wish to visit Castle Howard, Yorkshire’s finest stately home, and go for afternoon tea in one of the restaurants. There are also some tasty regional delicacies to try in the farm shop and a range of souvenirs to choose from in the gift shop. If you are more interested in natural beauty, why not take a picture-perfect steam train from the village of Pickering and travel through the idyllic valleys of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. You’ll stop at the very station used in the Harry Potter films, before arriving in the picturesque little village of Grosmont, where you can visit the engine sheds and see more steam trains up close. Or if you’d like to see some of the northern coast, you can take the train all the way to Whitby, a delightfully preserved seaside town with its red-roofed houses and dramatic abbey. Whichever option you go for, you’ll be in for a truly British experience, and at the end of the day we’ll drive you back through the moors to York for your onward journey home.
